8. mai 1940 seilte DS «Nordnorge» ut Trondheimsfjorden. 300 østerrikske alpejegere og marinesoldater var om bord. Målet var Hemnesberget. Hurtigruta var kapret, og skulle brukes som en trojansk hest på Helgeland. Operasjonen var godkjent av Hitler selv og fikk navnet «Operasjon Wildente».
